The Breaking of the Bread
La Bruna and the Wheat Rites
Before the great feast of July 2nd, Matera lives weeks of preparation tied to freshly harvested wheat and to bread, the city's symbolic food (Pane di Matera PGI).
We tell the story of the 'strazzo', the gesture of breaking and sharing bread, and the deep bond between agricultural cycles and popular devotion to the Madonna della Bruna.
