Light in the Bread Caves

Christmas in the Sassi

On December evenings the Sassi light up with lanterns and the path winds through caves carved into the tufa rock, once neighborhood ovens where Matera families baked bread for days at a time.

We walk slowly, as people once did, following the glow of oil lamps to a cave still alive today, where bread is broken and shared in a ritual as old as the city itself.
